COLD STRESS SURVEY & ASSESSMENT
Cold stress occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can be replaced due to exposure to low temperatures, wind, or cold surfaces. Employees may be exposed to cold stress during outdoor work, refrigerated environments, or cold indoor workplaces.
Prolonged exposure to cold conditions may negatively affect employee health, safety, and productivity if not properly assessed and controlled.

WHY IS COLD STRESS A RISK?
Exposure to cold stress may result in cold discomfort and reduced dexterity, shivering, fatigue, and loss of coordination; confusion and reduced concentration; frostbite and hypothermia in severe cases; increased accident risk and reduced productivity; cold conditions may also affect safe equipment handling and overall work performance.
Employers are legally required to assess and control employee exposure to cold stress in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Physical Agents Regulations, 2024; Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable.
Failure to assess cold stress may result in non-compliance and increased health and safety risks.
