LOCAL EXHAUST VENTILATION (LEV) SURVEY & ASSESSMENT
Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems are engineered controls designed to capture and remove airborne contaminants at their source before they enter the employee’s breathing zone. Effective LEV systems play a critical role in protecting employees from exposure to dusts, fumes, vapours, and other hazardous airborne substances.
Poorly designed, damaged, or poorly maintained LEV systems may fail to adequately control exposure, allowing contaminants to spread into the workplace and increasing health, safety, and fire or explosion risks.

WHY IS INEFFECTIVE LEV A RISK?
Ineffective or poorly performing LEV systems may result in increased exposure to hazardous dusts, fumes, vapours, and gases; elevated risk of occupational illnesses and respiratory conditions; contaminant build-up in the workplace atmosphere; increased fire and explosion risk; reduced effectiveness of other control measures and PPE; LEV systems must operate effectively to provide reliable, long-term exposure control.
Employers are legally required to ensure that local exhaust ventilation systems are effective and properly maintained in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2020 (Regulation 12), Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable
Failure to assess and maintain LEV system performance may result in non-compliance and increased employee exposure risk.

OUR SOLUTION
Qualitas Occupational Consulting is a Department of Employment and Labour Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) for Occupational Hygiene services.
We conduct professional LEV surveys to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of local exhaust ventilation systems using recognised methodologies and appropriate instrumentation. Our assessments include clear interpretation of results and practical, cost-effective recommendations to improve system performance and compliance.
- Evaluation of LEV system design, condition, and operation; Measurement of airflow, capture velocity, and system effectiveness; Identification of areas where contaminants may escape control; Comparison of performance against applicable requirements and good practice; Practical recommendations to improve LEV effectiveness and compliance; Clients receive a professional, audit-ready LEV survey report to support compliance, exposure control, and risk management.
