HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL AGENTS SURVEY & ASSESSMENT

Hazardous chemical agents are substances present in the workplace that may pose a risk to employee health through inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. These agents may occur in the form of dusts, fumes, gases, vapours, mists, fibres, or liquids and are commonly generated during manufacturing, processing, maintenance, and cleaning activities.

Employee exposure to hazardous chemical agents may not always be obvious and can result in both acute and long-term health effects if not properly assessed and controlled.

WHY ARE HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL AGENTS A RISK?

Exposure to hazardous chemical agents may result in respiratory irritation and occupational lung disease; skin and eye irritation or dermatitis; acute poisoning or chronic health effects; long-term diseases depending on the agent and exposure level; reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher compensation risk.

The severity of health effects depends on the type of chemical, concentration, frequency, and duration of exposure, as well as individual susceptibility.

Employers are legally required to identify, assess, and control employee exposure to hazardous chemical agents in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2020; Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable.

These regulations require both risk assessments and, where necessary, quantitative exposure monitoring.
