OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE FOR AUTOMOTIVE PLANTS, SPRAY BOOTHS AND WORKSHOPS

From vehicle assembly plants and component suppliers to panel beaters and fleet workshops, automotive work brings isocyanate paints, solvents, welding fume, noise and extraction systems that must be tested every two years.

Qualitas is a DEL Approved Inspection Authority for hazardous chemical agents, noise and lead, and carries out spray booth and LEV tests, isocyanate and solvent monitoring, welding fume monitoring and noise surveys for the automotive industry.

Panel beaters and fleet workshops nationwide

The Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 require a risk assessment for isocyanates, solvents and welding fume, air monitoring by an approved inspection authority where exposure may be significant, and an examination and test of every spray booth and extraction system at intervals not exceeding 24 months.

The Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024 apply to press shops, body shops and workshops, and the Lead Regulations apply to battery handling and recycling.

THE HAZARDS WE MEASURE IN AUTOMOTIVE WORK

Isocyanates from two-pack paints and clear coats, which are respiratory sensitisers with very low limits.

Solvent vapours from paint mixing, spraying and cleaning.

Welding fume and grinding dust in body shops and fabrication.

Metalworking fluid mist from machining.

Noise from presses, panel beating, air tools and compressors.

Lead in battery work, and repetitive work on assembly lines.

WHY QUALITAS

Qualitas Occupational Consulting is a Department of Employment and Labour Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) and a SANAS-accredited (ISO/IEC 17020) inspection body for asbestos, lead, noise and hazardous chemical agents, and applies the same quality system to all its assessments.

Every assessment is led by Christo de Wet, an occupational hygienist registered with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH), with 15 years of experience.

We work nationwide, and Qualitas has also carried out assessments in Botswana and Kazakhstan. Travel is quoted upfront.

You receive a professional, audit-ready report that stands up to inspection by the Department of Employment and Labour.

OUR SERVICES FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

How often must a spray booth be tested?
At intervals not exceeding 24 months, under regulation 12(b) of the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021. The test checks airflow, containment and filters against the booth's design, not only that the fans run.

Do panel beaters need isocyanate monitoring?
Where two-pack paints are sprayed, the chemical risk assessment usually calls for it. Isocyanates are respiratory sensitisers, and once a sprayer is sensitised even tiny exposures can trigger asthma.

Are air-fed masks enough on their own?
They are an important control, but the regulations require exposure to be controlled at source first. Monitoring shows how well the booth and the masks work together.

How do we get a quote for a plant or workshop?
Send the form below with your site location, WhatsApp us or call 082 649 6599. Tell us how many booths and employees you have, and we will quote you upfront.
