WHICH ASSESSMENT DO I NEED?
The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires every employer to identify health hazards and assess the risk to employees. Which surveys you need depends on what happens on your site.
Find what applies to you below, or ask us for a free Compliance Gap Analysis checklist and we'll tell you exactly what is required and what is overdue.

IF YOUR WORKPLACE HAS…
Loud machinery, compressors, presses or generators: noise survey and noise zoning
Dust, welding fume, solvents, paints or chemical storage: hazardous chemical agents survey
Batteries, solder, lead paint, smelting or scrap metal: lead exposure monitoring
A building constructed before the 2000s, or planned renovation: asbestos survey and inventory
Extraction hoods, spray booths or fume cabinets: local exhaust ventilation (LEV) test
Furnaces, kitchens, boiler rooms or outdoor work in summer: heat stress survey
Cold rooms, freezers or refrigerated warehouses: cold stress survey
Grinders, drills, jackhammers or heavy vehicles: vibration survey
Lifting, repetitive tasks or long hours at computers: ergonomics risk assessment
Offices with stuffy air, complaints or sealed windows: indoor air quality survey
Night shifts, warehouses, detailed work or new lighting: illumination survey
Healthcare, waste, sewage, food processing or cleaning work: hazardous biological agents assessment
Changing rooms, toilets, canteens and drinking water: facilities inspection
Any of the above and no recent health risk assessment: occupational health risk assessment
Most regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) require the exposure risk assessment to be repeated at intervals not exceeding two years: the Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024; Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021; Lead Regulations, 2001; Asbestos Abatement Regulations, 2020; Physical Agents Regulations, 2024; Ergonomics Regulations, 2019; and Regulations for Hazardous Biological Agents, 2022.
Noise and chemical monitoring must be done by an approved inspection authority at least every 24 months, and lead monitoring at least every 12 months where exposure exceeds half the limit.
