Heat stress occurs when the body is unable to regulate its internal temperature due to a combination of environmental heat, physical workload, and personal factors. Employees may be exposed to heat stress during indoor or outdoor work where high temperatures, radiant heat, humidity, or strenuous activity are present.
Prolonged or excessive heat exposure may negatively affect employee health, safety, and work performance if not properly assessed and controlled.
WHY IS HEAT STRESS A RISK?
Exposure to heat stress may result in heat rash, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion; reduced concentration and fatigue; dizziness, collapse, or heat stroke in severe cases; increased accident risk and reduced productivity; higher absenteeism and health-related incidents.
Certain employees may be at greater risk due to age, health status, medication, or acclimatisation.
Employers are legally required to assess and control employee exposure to heat stress in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Physical Agents Regulations, 2024; Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable.
Failure to conduct heat stress assessments may result in non-compliance and increased health and safety risks.
