ERGONOMICS RISK ASSESSMENT
Ergonomics focuses on how employees interact with their work environment, tools, equipment, and tasks. Poor ergonomic design may place excessive strain on the body, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and reducing work efficiency.
Ergonomics risk assessments evaluate physical, cognitive, and organisational factors to ensure work tasks are suited to employee capabilities and limitations.

WHY IS POOR ERGONOMICS A RISK?
Inadequate ergonomics may result in musculoskeletal disorders affecting the back, neck, shoulders, and upper limbs; repetitive strain injuries; fatigue, discomfort, and reduced concentration; increased absenteeism and reduced productivity; higher injury and compensation costs; ergonomic risks often develop gradually and may go unnoticed without formal assessment.
Employers are legally required to identify and control ergonomic risks in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Ergonomics Regulations, 2019; Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable.
Failure to assess ergonomic risks may result in non-compliance and increased injury risk.
