OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE FOR WAREHOUSING, LOGISTICS AND DISTRIBUTION
Warehouses and distribution centres look low-risk, but forklifts, conveyors and compressors are often loud enough to need noise zones, LPG and diesel trucks put exhaust into enclosed buildings, and pickers lift thousands of cases a shift.
Qualitas carries out the occupational hygiene assessments logistics employers need: noise surveys, exhaust gas monitoring, illumination surveys, manual handling and ergonomics assessments, and cold store surveys.

The Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024 require a noise risk assessment, and monitoring by an approved inspection authority where employees may be exposed at or above 85 dB(A).
The Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 cover carbon monoxide and diesel exhaust from forklifts and trucks.
The Ergonomics Regulations, 2019 require an ergonomics risk assessment where manual handling and repetitive work may cause injury, and the Physical Agents Regulations, 2024 cover lighting and cold.
THE HAZARDS WE MEASURE IN WAREHOUSES
Noise from forklifts, conveyors, sorters, compressors and reversing alarms.
Carbon monoxide from LPG forklifts and diesel exhaust in loading bays.
Lighting in aisles, racking and dispatch areas.
Manual handling, lifting and repetitive picking.
Cold in chillers and freezer stores.
Whole-body vibration on forklifts and reach trucks.

OUR SERVICES FOR WAREHOUSES AND LOGISTICS
- Does a warehouse really need a noise survey?
Often, yes. Forklifts, conveyors and compressors in an enclosed building can push exposure over 85 dB(A). A survey shows whether noise zones and hearing protection are needed.
Are LPG forklifts safe to use indoors?
They can be, if the engines are maintained and the building is ventilated. Carbon monoxide monitoring shows whether exposure stays below the limit, especially in cold stores and enclosed docks.
Do we need an ergonomics assessment for our pickers?
The Ergonomics Regulations, 2019 require one where manual handling or repetitive work may cause injury, which covers most picking and packing operations.
