NOISE SURVEY & ASSESSMENT
Workplace noise is a common occupational hazard that can negatively affect employee health, safety, and productivity. Noise is typically generated by machinery, tools, vehicles, and industrial processes, and prolonged exposure can result in permanent hearing damage.
A noise survey identifies and evaluates employee exposure to harmful noise levels and determines compliance with South African occupational health and safety legislation.

WHY IS WORKPLACE NOISE A RISK?
Excessive or prolonged exposure to noise may lead to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), reduced concentration and communication, increased fatigue and accident risk, reduced productivity and increased absenteeism.
Noise-related hearing loss is permanent but preventable through proper assessment and control.
Employers are legally required to assess and control employee exposure to noise in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993); Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024; Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), where applicable.
The Noise Exposure Regulations replaced the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations, 2003. The noise exposure risk assessment must be repeated at intervals not exceeding 24 months, and noise monitoring must be carried out by an approved noise inspection authority at least every 24 months.

WHAT THE SURVEY INCLUDES
- How often is it required?
The Noise Exposure Regulations, 2024 require the noise exposure risk assessment at intervals not exceeding 24 months (regulation 7), and noise monitoring by an approved noise inspection authority at least every 24 months (regulation 8). They replaced the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations, 2003.
What does the report contain?
Noise levels per area and task, 8-hour rating levels against the 85 dBA noise-rating limit, noise zones to demarcate, and recommended controls.
What must we prepare?
A site layout, a list of employees and work areas, and normal production on the day so the readings are representative.
