OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE IN ATLANTIS

Atlantis, on Cape Town's West Coast, hosts a special economic zone for green technology manufacturing, including wind and solar component makers, alongside an established industrial area of appliance, fibreglass, metal and plastics factories.

Qualitas carries out occupational hygiene surveys for these employers: welding fume and solvent monitoring, styrene and composite resin assessments, noise surveys, LEV tests and baseline risk assessments for new plants.

WHY QUALITAS

Qualitas Occupational Consulting is a Department of Employment and Labour Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) and a SANAS-accredited (ISO/IEC 17020) inspection body for asbestos, lead, noise and hazardous chemical agents, and applies the same quality system to all its assessments.

Every assessment is led by Christo de Wet, an occupational hygienist registered with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH), with 15 years of experience.

We work nationwide, and Qualitas has also carried out assessments in Botswana and Kazakhstan. Travel is quoted upfront.

You receive a professional, audit-ready report that stands up to inspection by the Department of Employment and Labour.

OUR SERVICES IN ATLANTIS

Does fibreglass manufacturing need styrene monitoring?
Usually. Styrene from polyester resins is a hazardous chemical agent with an exposure limit that open moulding often approaches. A chemical risk assessment and personal monitoring show whether ventilation is adequate.

Our plant is new in the Atlantis SEZ. Which assessments come first?
A baseline risk assessment, then noise and chemical surveys for the main processes once production starts, and LEV tests on extraction systems.

Do large welding bays need LEV tests?
Yes. Extraction that controls welding fume must be examined and tested at intervals not exceeding 24 months.
