OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE IN KATHU, KURUMAN AND POSTMASBURG

Kathu, Kuruman and Postmasburg sit at the centre of South Africa's iron ore and manganese belt, and every mine here depends on contractors, workshops, transport yards and laboratories in town. Qualitas carries out occupational hygiene surveys for these employers: noise surveys, dust and manganese monitoring, heat stress surveys and the other exposure assessments the law requires.

This page sets out which hazards and regulations apply to workplaces in the Gamagara and Kuruman area, and how to get a quote.

Iron ore and manganese mines. Qualitas carries out occupational hygiene assessments on mines under the Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), and can hold the section 12(1) occupational hygiene appointment for surface operations.

Engineering workshops and fabrication shops that build and repair mining equipment. Welding fume, grinding dust and noise are the main exposures, and the extraction systems over welding bays need a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) test.

Haulage, earthmoving and plant-hire contractors. Noise in workshops and cabs, diesel exhaust, and whole-body vibration on trucks and earthmoving machines.

Assay and process laboratories, where acids, solvents and fine ore dust are handled under fume cupboards that need periodic LEV testing.

Solar power plants and their construction contractors, where outdoor work in Kalahari summer temperatures makes heat stress the hazard to assess first.

Lime works around Lime Acres, and the agricultural co-operatives, feedlots and grain stores that serve the district.

Workplaces in town and contractors' own premises fall under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993).

THE HAZARDS WE MEASURE HERE

Manganese dust. Manganese is a hazardous chemical agent with a low occupational exposure limit, and its effects on the nervous system build up over years. Anyone who handles, crushes, loads or repairs equipment contaminated with manganese ore needs personal air monitoring.

Iron ore and respirable crystalline silica. Crushing and screening ore and quartzite waste rock releases respirable dust that can contain silica.

Noise. Crushers, compressors, generators, grinders and heavy vehicles regularly exceed the 85 dB(A) noise-rated limit.

Heat. Summer afternoons in the Kalahari regularly pass 35 °C, and the Physical Agents Regulations, 2024 require heat to be assessed where it may affect employees.

OUR SERVICES IN KATHU, KURUMAN AND POSTMASBURG

Does manganese dust need to be monitored by an approved inspection authority?
Yes, where employees may be exposed to it outside a mine. Manganese is a hazardous chemical agent, and the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 require exposure monitoring by an approved inspection authority at intervals set by the risk assessment. Qualitas is an AIA for hazardous chemical agents.

We are a contractor working on a mine near Kathu. Which law applies to us?
Work on the mine itself falls under the Mine Health and Safety Act and the mine's own occupational hygiene programme. Your own workshop, yard or office in town falls under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and you as the employer are responsible for the assessments there.

Is a heat stress survey required in the Northern Cape?
The Physical Agents Regulations, 2024 require employers to assess heat where it may affect employees. In Kathu and Kuruman summers that covers most outdoor work and hot workshops. Heat stress surveys are outside our AIA scope, but they are done to the same quality system.
