OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE IN VANDERBIJLPARK AND VEREENIGING
The Vaal Triangle grew around steel, and its steelworks, foundries, engineering shops and chemical plants still employ thousands. These are some of the most exposure-intensive workplaces in Gauteng.
Qualitas carries out occupational hygiene surveys for employers in Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Meyerton: metal fume and dust monitoring, noise surveys, heat stress surveys and LEV tests.

OUR SERVICES IN THE VAAL TRIANGLE
- We are a maintenance contractor on a steel plant. Whose job is our exposure monitoring?
Yours. The Occupational Health and Safety Act places the duty on each employer for its own employees. The plant may set conditions, but the contractor must assess and monitor its own people's exposure to noise, fume and heat.
What is a noise zone, and who decides where it goes?
An area where the noise level is at or above 85 dB(A) must be demarcated as a noise zone, and hearing protection must be worn in it. A noise survey by an approved inspection authority measures the levels and maps the zones.
Does relining a furnace with refractory brick need dust monitoring?
Cutting and removing refractory releases respirable crystalline silica, so a risk assessment is required and air monitoring usually follows. The work is often short, so plan the monitoring before the shutdown starts.
